DC Latching
Latching solenoids are a combination of an electromagnetic solenoid and permanent magnets. An electrical pulse of correct polarity is applied to a solenoid coil causing it to close, upon cessation of the pulse the internal permanent magnets continue to hold the solenoid in the closed position. To reverse the solenoid a low power electrical pulse of opposite polarity is applied to the circuit.
The pulse duration is determined purely by the time the solenoid takes to complete its function with the addition of a safety margin. With the Benson range a 50-millisecond pulse is sufficient for the small BLM0 whilst a 100-millisecond pulse is recommended for the larger BLM3 and BLM5.
As with conventional solenoids there is a limit to the amount of power that can be applied to a latching solenoid. There is little point in pulling more than the permanent magnets will hold; otherwise a conventional solenoid would be a more economic device to use. In a similar vein once magnetic saturation has been reached no further pull will result by increasing the input power further.
Coil leads fitted as standard will be 200mm free length.
Leads can be cut to desired length on request.
